Chris’s
Animal Stories
–Not too much exciting this year, Patches and Tuffy still own the
place. Tuffy eats everything, he’s an eating machine, he especially
like Chris’s spaghetti sauce, it works out well because he licks the
plate so clean we just put them back in the cupboard – saves water in
the dish washer!
In
the spring when it warms up, Tuffy gets bumps and so we bathe him weekly
and this year had him “buzz” cut. It was the most amazing thing;
inside that huge ball of fur is the most pathetic, skinny long legged
cat you’ve ever seen. In fact he was so embarrassed that he stayed
close to home for weeks. But, come fall he kicked into gear and grew a
new coat that is perfect for shedding on anything and everything – the
boy is back!!!
We’re
host to all the deer you could ever want including one we named
“Ribs”. We had friends over for Memorial Day dinner and this doe was
laying right near the deck and we had noticed her for a couple of days,
she didn’t seem healthy and her ribs were showing. Chris walked out
and fed her some greens and she didn’t even get up. That immediately
became her spot to lay and wait for chow. Turns out she had twins who
also came to join in “occupying” the territory, but Ribs remains the
most friendly and with a little “forced” feeding, she’s completely
recovered.
Mamasita
our resident mama squirrel normally prefers shelled pecans, but a friend
gave Chris a bag of whole ones, Mama immediately recognized an asset to
her winter 401K and started burying them, so we’ll probably have pecan
trees sprouting all over the yard this spring.
We
haven’t had any inside raccoon visitors lately, but the other night I
looked out to see one standing on the top railing on the kitchen deck
dining at Chris’s bird feeder, when I opened the door and asked
“what he was doing” he just casually walked away, didn’t even
leave a tip – how rude?
So
much for this year, pretty uneventful which ain’t all that bad when it
comes right down to it!!!
Chris’s Animal Stories
–This year is really quiet on the animal scene. Mamasita our resident
Mama squirrel had a couple more batches of little ones, but we’ve not
seen her now for months, so assume her time has passed. For a while we
had a guy we called “Bob” but he too has moved along.
We
still have a resident herd of deer including one Chris calls Tortilla
and her pushy friend Shadow. Turns out they’re Mexican deer (I guess)
they love flour tortillas, not corn, only flour? Thinning has cut down
the herd, but we still have enough to share if anyone is interested!
I’m considering Ebay - - shipping and handling not included.
We
had a pesky raccoon that came in to eat the cat food so we tried to trap
him, but he was too wily. However we did catch a small ‘possum so many
times it thought the capture cage was a new type of feeding station. The
last time Chris opened the cage and went back a half hour later - the
little guy was still in there waiting for another helping of food! So,
she had to dump him out and tell him to “beat it”. Note: Year 2004 February - Patches, our faithful companion and protector was put to sleep, she was 14 years old. August 24th - Tuffy went out on early patrol and never returned, he remains on eternal patrol.
September 17th - Max
arrived and immediately became attached to Chris. |
